The best way to get familiar with a new piece of equipment is by using it in the field. By taking this approach you can work out any kinks before heading to your customer’s job site. After conducting some research on what I could do to help my company better service our customers, I approached my general manager with the idea of adding one flex sprayer to our rental fleet.
For those unfamiliar with flex sprayers, this piece of equipment is used to propel liquid coatings onto wood surfaces. The tool itself looks like an extension pole equipped with a high-pressure spray nozzle at one end and a handle at the other. The nozzle is connected to a hose that leads to a pump, which draws liquid from an attached fluid tank.
1. Not just for painting
My first impression of the flex sprayer was that it made it easy for me to apply tint quickly and efficiently. But after using it for a while, I discovered an added benefit: It also makes cleanup easier by reaching spots other tools can’t. For instance, after finishing the garage doors, I sprayed the tint onto some metal siding that had been damaged by other equipment. The other employees on my crew told me they had tried to fix this problem before but could not reach it with their rollers or brushes. Afterward, I used the flex sprayer again to apply a light coat of clear over the siding. I was surprised that the tool helped me do this job as well as it did.
2. Flexible work time
One reason for purchasing a flex sprayer is its ability to give you more working time on a job site. Instead of having to use several standard tools to complete all the prep work on a job site, you can use this single piece of equipment to perform many tasks. For example, after using it to apply the tint, I was able to reapply clear without changing hoses or tools—a benefit that reduced the time it took me to complete this step. The result was that I had more time to take care of other issues that came up on the job site.
3. Flexible workspace
Another benefit of using a flex sprayer is its ability to reach places you wouldn’t normally be able to access with standard tools, which can result in more efficient production times. For example, I applied tint to garage doors located inside a building, something I would not have been able to do with standard tools. This job required me to set up a scaffolding inside the building, which I was able to do without much difficulty because the tool’s lightweight design made it easy for me to move around.
4. Flexible supply lines
The main reason you would want to use a flex sprayer is that it offers a less expensive option to renting or purchasing larger, heavier equipment that does the same thing. In my case, we were able to use our existing paint system and also save money because we didn’t have to buy additional hoses. And since we could handle this job with just one tool and a few gallons of tint, we could pass these cost savings along to our customers.
5. Flexible training time
Getting users completely trained on how to use flex sprayers takes less time than it does to teach them how to operate traditional airless equipment. That’s because the job functions are pretty straightforward; all you need is a basic understanding of how to paint systems work. Also, since flex sprayers are lightweight, you don’t need to worry about your employees injuring themselves by carrying around heavy equipment.
The cost is low compared with other paints sprayers on the market. It’s perfect for small projects: garages, patios, porches, etc… . All you have to do is attach it to a regular water-paint system. I would recommend this product for an individual who has smaller projects than most or someone who enjoys painting with sprayers.
